Interior Stair Remodel with Tile Removal and Wood Finish in Cold Spring Harbor, NY
BuildingLI handled an interior stair remodel in Cold Spring Harbor, NY where an older tile-covered staircase needed a cleaner wood finish and attention to worn stair conditions. The work stayed focused on the stairway and landing area: remove the old surface, clean up what was underneath, address problem spots, and bring the stairs back to a finished wood look.
Tile on stairs can be tough on a home over time. Once the tile starts looking dated or the stairs begin to feel cracked, noisy, or uneven in spots, simply covering everything again is not always the right move. On this job, the existing tile surface had to come off before the stair treads and related wood areas could be prepared for stain and finish.
Interior stair work also takes planning because the stairway is usually part of the home’s daily path. Dust, loose tile pieces, adhesive, tools, and finish materials all have to be managed in a tighter area than a normal open room. The work was kept orderly so each step could be handled in the right sequence.

Project Notes
The first part of the job was careful removal. Tile demo on stairs is different from pulling tile in an open room because every tread is both a work surface and a walking surface. Small sharp pieces, dust, and leftover setting material have to be cleared as the stairway is opened up.
After the tile came off, the exposed stair surfaces needed prep before stain could go on. That meant cleaning the stair area, checking the spots that were cracked or creaky, and getting the wood ready for a finish that would look clean instead of rushed. The finished appearance depended on that prep work just as much as the stain itself.
The wood railing and stair trim details were part of making the stairway feel finished again. New wood components around the stair and landing area had to line up cleanly with the rest of the staircase so the final result looked like one connected interior feature, not a patched-over repair.
Cleanup mattered throughout the job. A stairway is a narrow work zone, and loose tile or dust cannot be left sitting in the path. The area was kept controlled through removal, prep, staining, and finish work so the stairs could be closed out properly.
